Cristiano Ronaldo's smashed Ferrari 599

MANCHESTER United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was lucky to escape injury when he wrote off his Ferrari in a crash near Manchester Airport.

The 23-year-old European and World Player of the Year was driving his Ferrari 599 GTB through a tunnel under the runways when he smashed into the wall.

Police say he was fortunate to emerge unscathed from the crash, which happened on Wilmslow Road, between Hale and Wilmslow, at around 10.20am today.

No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured in the collision.

Constable Nigel Snell, from the road policing unit, said: "Given the damage to the car it is fortunate the driver was not injured.

"We are trying to establish exactly what happened and I would appeal to anyone that may have witnessed the collision to contact police."

A spokeswoman for United said: "He was involved in an accident on his way to training. He is fine and trained with the team today."
