Battle Of Saragarhi, the first ever war movie in Punjabi, is based on the last two decades of nineteenth century Baluchistan, says Surinder Sharma, director of the period film, Battle Of Saragarhi. The crew and cast of the film is a mix of experience and freshness, enthusiasm and professionalism. While some of central characters are well know actors like Jarnail Singh, Narinder Pal Neena, Amritpal, Shipra Kasana, Gauri Singh.
One shoot schedule of ten days has already been finished in the adjoining villages of Chandigarh. Surinder Sharma says that the main focus of this ten day schedule was on covering the background, family history of the leading soldiers of the 36th Sikh Battalion who were manning the Saragarhi fortress. The story of remaining soldiers will be taken up in the fourth coming schedule.
Jarnail singh who pairs with Shipra kasana is quite thrilled with his role of Hawaldar isher singh who leads the battle and leads from front.
The Battle of Saragarhi was fought on September 12, 1897 under the dynamic leadership of Hawaldar Isher singh when 21 young Sikh soldiers guarded their post against an army of over 10,000 Afridi Pathans. All the 21 soldiers fought till their last battle killing over 1000 tribesman and remaining unyielded till they fell to the ground. Their supreme sacrifice was recognized by conferring the highest gallantry award of the then British rulers. The Indian order of merit posthumously.
