New Delhi: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly dismissed their chances of winning the English Premier League title this season during a fan interaction at the hallowed Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The Red Devils are placed fifth in the league table after the end of fourth round, with seven points from two wins and two draws. Their 'noisy neighbours' City are leading the charge with 12 points from as many games.

Considering the huge spending in the transfer market and also the ever increasing expectations from the fans in the second season of the Dutchman in Manchester, his declaration reads like a surrender note to their title rivals.

A report in Manchester Evening News claimed that van Gaal has indeed told fans that he expected the most successful English club to finish second or third. But the former Bayern Munich coach assured that the club will compete in all three cup competitions.

Besides, the 64-year-old also revealed that his assistant, Ryan Giggs, will succeed him as United manager once he retires in 2017.

Immediately after helping the Netherlands national team to a third place finish in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, van Gaal arrived in United, replacing under-fire David Moyes.

Known as a maverick coach in the football circle, van Gaal have had stints at some of the biggest clubs in the world. He won the UEFA Champions League and Dutch league titles with Ajax, before heading to Barcelona where, he helped the Catalans to back-to-back La Liga trophies. He also won a Bundesliga trophy with Bayern.
