John Hastings ruled out of Caribbean tri-series with ankle injury

John Hastings, Australia's pacer, has been ruled out of his team's upcoming tour of the Caribbean after breaking down with an ankle injury in the Indian Premier League 2016.

Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Wednesday (April 27) that emerging quick Scott Boland will replace his Victorian compatriot in Australia's squad for the One-Day International tri-series against the hosts and South Africa in June.

The 27-year-old has played six ODIs since his debut against India in January at the WACA.

Hastings, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders, picked up the injury during training ahead of their clash against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on April 13.

Alex Kountouris, CA's sports science and sports medicine manager, said Hastings had surgery on his injured ankle a few days ago. "John experienced pain in his left ankle during his recent stint in the IPL and had scans upon returning home which have confirmed early stage bone stress of his fibula bone near his ankle," he said. "While laid off with this injury we have taken this opportunity to undertake arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs in his left ankle which have been causing him concern for some time and were possibility contributing to the cause of the bone stress.

"John had this surgery over the weekend and now requires a period of rest to resolve the bone stress and recover from surgery before he will resume bowling," Kountouris added.

Australia's first match of the tri-series will be against the West Indies on June 5
