Dubai: The Indian Independence Day golf tournament, one of the longest-running events on the domestic circuit, will have a festive feel to it when it gets under way at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club today with a 1.30pm shot gun start.

The tournament, now in its 15th year, will also mark the start of the Indian Golfers Society's (IGS) calendar of event for the season. The society intends to organise four to five tournaments this year besides arranging some overseas trips for its members.

"We are delighted with the overwhelming response to the tournament — a clear reflection of its popularity," said K.J. Singh, IGS chairman. "I am sure there will be a great sense of camaraderie among the members when they battle it out for honours.

"The intention behind forming the society was to provide healthy competitions to golfers in a relaxed atmosphere," Singh said. "The society's events also play a role in building a business referral network while learning, playing and improving our golf skills."

The tournament will follow the individual stableford format with a three-quarter handicap allowance. Prizes will be forthe top three in two divisions.
