Harris fifer sets up Australia victory

A century from Mahela Jayawardene was not enough to save Sri Lanka from a heavy defeat in the first Test against Australia.
ayawardene (105) and Angelo Mathews (95) linked up for a sixth-wicket stand of 142 as Sri Lanka negotiated the morning session unscathed but after Ryan Harris, who took five for 62, had removed the former skipper it was a sprint to a 125-run win for Australia.
Sri Lanka's total of 253 represented the best score by any Test side batting fourth in Galle, but the damage had been done when they were bowled out for 105 first time around.
It represented a 100th win in Tests for Ricky Ponting, the first player to achieve the feat.
After resuming on 120 for five chasing an unlikely 379 for victory, the hosts faced only three and a half overs this morning before rain halted proceedings.
When play resumed, it was hard going for the Sri Lanka batsmen until successive boundaries off Mitchell Johnson took Mathews to 50.
Jayawardene heaved Nathan Lyon for six, then paddled the same bowler for four over his shoulder two overs later.
Jayawardene claimed his 29th Test century with a cut off Harris after lunch, but the bowler had his revenge soon after, bowling him off an inside edge.
With the tail offering little support - Suraj Randiv and Rangana Herath fell cheaply - Mathews freed his arms in search of a century and was bowled by Shane Watson as he swiped across the line.
Suranga Lakmal was the last man to fall, well caught by Johnson over his shoulder off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.
