Sourav Ganguly, one of India's all-time leading captains and batsmen, has been asked to join the Justice Mukul Mudgal probe panel and assist with the investigations in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing and betting case. Ganguly joins the panel as an expert on cricketing affairs.

Ganguly had been the leading contender to take the place of a 'former cricketer of repute' that Justice Mudgal needed in his new committee. His inclusion in the probe panel has been in the News since Justice Mudgal submitted a wish-list of persons that he would like in the panel to undersee the second round of investigations. The panel is headed by Retd Justice Mukul Mudgal and includes advocates L Nageswara Rao, Niloy Dutta and senior IPS officer B B Mishra.

"We had requested Sourav Ganguly to join the IPL probe panel and he has agreed to join us in the investigations. I had telephoned Sourav and he confirmed me about coming on board. We haven't yet decided on the day when we will meet. Since our committee member L Nageswara Rao was not present today, we couldn't fix the date of our next meeting. We will let you know when the committee meets next," Justice Mudgal told PTI.

"He is absolutely free to carry on with his media commitments. His job is to help us with the role of cricketing angle in the whole issue, and it does not stop him from doing commentary and writing columns," Mudgal added.

Reports also indicated that former India cricketer and World Cup winner, Mohinder Amarnath was also considered for the role, but Ganguly was chosen ahead of him.

The Justice Mudgal probe panel was put in place by a bench headed by Justice AK Patnaik to conduct investigations against 13 persons, including former BCCI president N Srinivasan, in the spot-fixing and betting scandal that shook world cricket last year.
The expose led to arrests of former CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan as well as India discard S Sreesanth, first-class cricketers Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila along with Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh to name a few.
