Dubai: The new cricket season will commence even before the summer heat subsides.

Domestic cricket tournaments usually commence at summer's end, but the Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) and Seven Seas are already gearing up to stage tournaments by mid-September.

In past years, the local cricket season concludes by the end of June and resumes after summer. But because of this year's Ramadan schedule, the season crossed over until August.

Tournaments organised by the cricket councils of Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Ajman had its finals on August 31. Seven Seas, which organises regular tournaments will start their new season tournaments from September 9.

Two tournaments

The seventh edition of the Al Taher Spices Cricket Cup for B division teams will be held at the Seven Seas Sports Club ground in the Dubai Investment Park. DCC has already announced two B division tournaments from the third week of September to be followed by the Mobil Cup.

Speaking to Gulf News, Tariq Butt, UAE umpire and organiser of Seven Seas tournaments, said: "There is so much demand from local cricketers and teams that it is hard to have a long season break. The Indian Independence Day cricket tournament will be held on September 16.

"We could not stage it on August 15 due to Ramadan. We just completed the Pakistan Independence Day tournament last Friday.

"Oasis Chemical, and Shijana Cup will also commence soon. We have plans to stage a very big tournament involving all nationalities living in the UAE soon."
