Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been left out of the West Indies squad for the two-Test series against Australia, which starts on June 3. Meanwhile, the West Indian selectors have included the uncapped duo of Shane Dowrich and Rajindra Chandrika in the 14-man squad.

Chanderpaul, a veteran of 164 Tests, is 86 runs short of breaking Brian Lara's record for the all-time leading run-scorer for West Indies. However, his poor form in recent times has been cited as the reason to look ahead at younger players.

Chief selector Clive Lloyd and coach Phil Simmons faced criticism from several quarters after they decided against including Chanderpaul in the training squad recently. Many former players including Brian Lara had expressed disgust at the way Chanderpaul was being treated. Lara had called for a farewell series while Chanderpaul too had expressed disappointment at the way WICB was handling his situation.

However new head coach Phil Simmons and Lloyd emphasised that selecting a West Indies team had nothing to do with sentiment and was all about picking the best available players to compete against a formidable Australian side.

Dominica hosts the first Test beginning June 3 with the second and final match getting underway in Jamaica on June 11.

West Indies squad: Denesh Ramdin (c), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Rajindra Chandrika, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor
