The Kites premiere at AMC Empire in Times Square was a gala event. The two stars of the film Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori came together in a limo as bhangra beats filled the atmosphere. On Sunday night, New York saw a Bollywood film with full-on action, song and drama and loved it.

More than a Bollywood film, ‘Kites’ also has the elements of a film for world audiences and that’s what Brett Ratner (editor of films like ‘Rush Hour’) felt. When Ratner saw ‘Kites’, he thought that it’s an Indian film that can easily appeal to western audience.

The Hindi movie is actually 130 minutes long. Ratner has edited it to a 90-min long sleeker, racier version of the original with less drama. And Ratner was also sure about the Hrithik-Barbara pairing, who were not American stars but have the appeal and chemistry that will work in Hollywood. His ‘Kites Remix’ version will release on May 28.

And since the film’s heroine is a Mexican, director Myrna Moncayo of Tribeca Enterprises, which runs New York’s annual Tribeca Film Festival feels, “Kites should resonate with Mexican audiences because Barbara Mori is a popular Mexican telenovela actress. The part of the film which segues into Mexico will have a big appeal.”

Sanjeev Lamba, CEO, Reliance BIG Pictures, says that the film will establish new audiences for Bollywood and is going to get the biggest global screening of any Indian movie ever. Releasing on May 21, the movie will play on 2,300 screens worldwide in 60 countries, according to Lamba.
