She has gone from bouffant brunette to sleek blonde yet it seems that no matter what Cheryl Cole does with her hairstyle, women love it.

The singer has been voted Britain's hair icon for 2011 in a survey of 5,000 women.

Cole beat the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Winslet, Rihanna and Beyonce to the top spot.

Her victory in the poll, carried out for the makers of hair-loss treatment MediGro, provides an uplifting footnote to a difficult year for the star.

The 28-year-old recently told how she was delighted to have returned to a size 8 after a battle with malaria last year saw her dip to a size 6.

She said in an interview: "The curves are back, well and truly. I've got my b**bs and b** back and, yeah, I like it. I think it's sexy."
