The Moth Diaries in line with cult classics: Director

UNP ImageAbu Dhabi: Vampire thriller The Moth Diaries is not an attempt to ride off the steam generated by the Twilight phenomenon, said its director Mary Harron ahead of its premiere at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) yesterday.

"In spirit, the film is totally opposite Twilight and has nothing to do with that genre," said Harron in the capital. The director, who earlier directed the film adaptation of the bloody American Psycho novel, says her latest film is a ghost story that falls more in line with cult classics such as The Virgin Suicides and Rosemary's Baby.

"The Twilight craze is all about loving the unattainable. It's also about chastity. But The Moth Diaries has a bit of supernatural and is about two powerful girls fighting it out." Set in an elite all-girl boarding school, the film starring British model and actress Lily Cole and Irish sensation Sarah Bolger, of The Tudors fame, explores the brooding world of teenage friendships, adolescent angst and peer pressure.

"Vampire per se is just a metaphor in this film there's a lot more to it. I play a character who's quite odd. She has several layers," said Cole of her role as the sinister newcomer Ernessa.

Ahead of the premiere, ADFF organisers honoured the film's actresses with the Black Pearl Rising Star Award, a new award presented by Egyptian actor Khaled Abol Naga.
