A sardonic hipster, shirtless in his track suit and neon yellow Wayfarers, is terrifying London’s police force, knocking off the good guys one at a time.

Good thing Jason Statham’s on the case, as Britain’s reigning tough guy is just the bloke to sort out a cop killer, especially when the letter of the law needs bending a teensy bit.

Statham’s character, Detective Sergeant Tom Brant, should be familiar since Statham is a sort of one-trick stallion who typically breezes through even the most complex action sequences with a menacing glare and cool reserve. That’s a compliment by the way — there’s nothing wrong with being really good at one type of role.

Playing opposite Statham is Paddy Considine, providing a sort of moral compass to Statham’s outraged and vengeful copper. Considine should be called Paddy Constraint, because that seems to be one of his cardinal cinematic virtues, providing the slow burn that, predictably, sparks into rage long enough to turn Statham loose on the unrepentant cop slayer.

If this sounds formulaic, that’s because it is, more or less. Hand Statham a fun and gritty script, a la Lock Stock, and he’s great. Give him a not-so-great one, and you get Transporter 3. Here, it’s something inbetween. Blitz is stylised and savvy and your best bet for some Statham action.
