The actor to play a Pakistani character?

Indian film maker Mira Nair is set to adapt Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid’s Booker nominated book ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ on to screen, and guess who is most likely to grab the lead role - Shahid Kapoor.

We hear that Mira has considered some of the stars in the current new crop in Bollywood and has zeroed in on Shahid to shoulder the role of a Pakistani-American who has a prospering professional life in the US until the September 11 attacks change it all. The movie sees the transformation of a well educated business executive to a reluctant fundamentalist as he battles the dilemmas, anxieties and personal heartache in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on US.

The book also has a few controversial sequences like the one in which the protagonist smiles when he sees the twin towers crumbling down on television.

Tackling this subject would require sensitivity and gravity not just from the director but also from the actor who plays the lead role. Mira apparently thinks Shahid could handle the job.

We are waiting for an official confirmation, though.
