RANGEELEY Review ......... A BIG DISAPPONITMENT

Huge expectations sometimes bring disappointments. That’s exactly what happened with Jimmy Sheirgill’s latest production – Rangeelay. The names of Jimmy Sheirgill, Navaniat Singh (director) and Dheeraj Rattan (writer) spell a formula of a box office hit usually, however things seem to just fall flat with Rangeelay.

The problem with Rangeelay is definitely its done-to-death, very predictable, clichéd plot which seems to be borrowed heavily from a lot of Hindi movies. Nothing wrong with seeking inspiration but the fact is that the plot of Rangeelay is thinner like wafer with the movie constantly giving you the feeling of déjà vu.
Though the film boasts of some hi-octane action and a couple of cute romantic and comic sequences but the weak storyline kills the impact. The film should’ve probably been named, ‘Rangeela’ instead of ‘Rangeelay’ as the movie just belongs to Jimmy Sheirgill and has the likes of Binnu Dhillon and Rana Ranbir reduced to just poor sidies.
The story involves three recovery agents – Sunny (Jimmy Sheirgill), Titli (Binnu Dhillon) and Shotgun (Rana Ranbir), Sunny being their boisterous leader. He falls in love with a girl, Simi (Neha Dhupia) who is chirpy and not the types who will fall in love easily. She has two Uncles (Jaswinder Bhalla and Shivender Mahal) who constantly keep competing with eachother in proving their love for their niece.
The movie lacks focus big time. It starts off on a great note giving us a hint that probably the movie is about the action-comedy-filled ‘recoveries’ by the trio but soon, it changes track and transforms into a love story that terribly lacks ‘heart’.
Although the film throws some pleasant surprises in its first hour, with several pleasurable episodes and one-liners, managing to bring a smile on your face but the writer brings in cliches in the post-interval portions, which get tedious after a point. The sub-plot involving the villains [Tej Sapru and Angad] appear confusing and half-baked and finale is abrupt.
Music is just average. The title track and the ‘boliyaan’ songs are entertaining though. Visually, the film is appealing with certain close-up shots looking exceptionally great onscreen.
Although Rangeelay has several notable actors, yet the show clearly belongs to Jimmy Sheirgill who acts with effortless ease. He delivers a fine performance. Neha Dhupia gives repetitive expressions throughout the film and doesn’t seem to be Punjabi enough. Binnu Dhillon is totally wasted and we really wonder what made him sign for a role like this?Rana Ranbir is same like in any other film- nothing new while Jaswinder Bhalla is in great form. Shivender Mahal is decent. Tej Sapru is wasted. Angad is impressive as a double-shaded character!
Overall, Rangeelay is just a half-baked project; entertaining only in parts.
