Geneva: Angelina Jolie has been recognised for her work over the past decade as a UN refugee agency goodwill ambassador at an awards ceremony honouring a Yemeni aid group.

Jolie took the stage to praise Yemen's Society for Humanitarian Solidarity, which has helped thousands of refugees and migrants flee Somalia and reach Yemen's shores in boats across the Gulf of Aden.

She told the ceremony Monday night that for those fleeing "their only alternative is to risk death at sea" - but there's no doubt more would perish if not for the aid group.

She said the world "must not forget what is happening in this part of the world" where desperation is driven by famine, drought and violence.
