Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

Alexandre Desplat will compose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

While Alexandre Desplat was hired to score Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 no composer was confirmed for Part 2, and some fans were hoping that John Williams, who scored the first three movies, would return to finish the franchise off.

Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce the composer for Part 2, but the official Deathly Hallows website mentions on Desplat’s bio page that he “next starts work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the conclusion of the Harry Potter franchise.”

A grand score from Williams would have been great, but Desplat (who recently won Composer of the Year at the World Soundtrack Awards and has been nominated for 3 Oscars) is a talented composer. Director David Yates described Part 1 as “a road film” where as Part 2 is a “big opera, a great big epic, with huge battles.” Desplat isn’t really known as an “epic” composer but a quick listen to some tracks from his score for The Golden Compass shows he is more than capable of providing epic tracks.

Having Desplat return will also provide some continuity with the music, which is ideal as Deathly Hallows is basically one giant film. The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 soundtrack isn’t released until November 16th, but it has already found its way onto Youtube.

We will obviously have to wait until November 19th to see how Alexandre Desplat’s score fits with the film, but what do Potter fans think about the composer returning for Part 2? Would you have liked Williams to score the final film?
