He’s Bollywood’s biggest superstar. But there was a time when Amitabh Bachchan used to gatecrash weddings or travel in trains without buying a ticket.

Big B, as he is popularly known, was in Bhopal filming for Aarakshan when he became nostalgic about his college days. “We were talking on the sets about college and university, and how in the hostel, when food was scarce or our pockets were empty, we would find novel ways of feeding ourselves.

“[We would] look for a wedding, borrow an ill-fitting suit from an affluent colleague and gatecrash a wedding and feed ourselves, posing as ‘men from the boy’s side’,” he posted on his blog Bigb.bigadda.com. “They [those who gatecrash] are the ones who get looked after the most! Those were mad days. When you look back, you wonder how on earth did we ever pull those stupid pranks.”

The 68 year old, who studied at Allahabad’s Jnana Prabodhini and Boys’ High School, followed by Nainital Sherwood College, before graduating from Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College, recalled how he and his friends would board a train without tickets because they couldn’t afford to buy them.

“Like when we visited our alma mater Sherwood College the next year after passing out. We spent Founder’s week there and then found ourselves out of money. Not even enough to buy a train ticket back to Delhi.

“So what do we do? Board the train just as it’s pulling out of the station, cling on to the doors and spend the rest of the journey on the steps outside of the compartment until some kind-hearted ticket holder takes pity on our condition and offers to share his berth with us,” he posted.
