When Kiran Rao wears her casting glasses

Dhobi Ghat, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, is getting rave reviews for the first-time director Kiran Rao, wife of Aamir Khan. But her husband was not a part of the cast in the beginning as Kiran didn’t want someone famous to play Arun, the character essayed by Aamir in the film.

While talking to the press in Toronto, Aamir expressed his grief that his wife wasn’t interested in casting him. It wasn’t a cakewalk for Aamir to get that role. Like others he too gave screen tests to his wife. Kiran says, “Somehow diabolically and Machiavelli (like), he got the role.” Aamir also loved the character of Munna, the laundry boy, but Kiran signed Prateik Babbar for the role.

With Dhobi Ghat, Aamir also fell in love with Kiran again. Yes, it all happened during the narration of the story. When Aamir first heard the story from Kiran, he was taken aback, “I was so fascinated by what she had written. It is one of the best scripts I have ever read.”

Aamir met Kiran on the sets of Lagaan and married her in the year 2005. Kiran is Aamir’s second wife after Reena, whom he divorced.
