For me Gurdas Maan is one of the The MOST Distinguished Punjabis.

Gurdas Maan
was born on 4th January, 1957 in Giddarbaha, Muktsar District, Punjab, India. His song "Dil Da Mamala Hai" brought him to national attention in India in 1980. He has recorded over 27 albums. Gurdas Maan was formally educated in Malout. After completing his education, his parents moved him to Patiala for further studies. He is of Sikh faith. The city fascinated him especially because it was home to the National Institute of Sports, as Gurdas Maan is a keen sports enthusiast. He joined the N.I.S and gained a Masters Degree in Physical Education.

He took part in youth festivals organized by various universities and won numerous awards for his singing and acting. He competed in many athletic events and won medals including a bronze at the National Championship. He is also a black belt in Judo. In one of his stage play he sang a song which he wrote himself and called "Dil da mamla hai". The play was seen by a producer of a Jalandhar TV station, who then approached him for a TV recording of his song, which Gurdas reluctantly agreed to. When the song was aired on December 31, 1980 it stormed the nation and Gurdas Maan became a household name. The overwhelming success of the song grabbed the attention of HMV who wanted to record the song and from this came his second album in 1981.

He has produced over 27 albums and has written over 200 songs. He also wrote and directed TV programs like POP Time for Doordarshan Delhi. When Gurdas Maan started his career as a performer, there was no market for solo singers, as the market was dominated by the duets. He declined many offers to perform as a duet as he was confident of becoming successful as a solo artist. Even today when organizers arrange for a group of artists to perform, he always perform solo. He has toured the globe and charmed audiences with his versatile performances.

Credit goes to Gurdas Maan for raising Punjabi music from a mere regional level to an international level by giving it a fresh look. The ever-popular "Apna Punjab hove" track has surpassed all other songs by Gurdas Maan. This track has received awards for The Best Song, Album & Best International Artist of the Asian Pop and Media Awards held in Birmingham in 1998. This song was orgnially written by Makhan Brar, who lives in Toronto. As Gurdas Mann was performing in his concert in Toronto, Makhan Brar handed this song to him. It became a hit at that concert. Later on Gurdas Maan added a last verse to this song "marjaane Maana kion Punjab Janda khind da" and included it in his forthcoming album.

He starred in the hit film "Shaheed Udham Singh", where his true personality was highlighted as a Sikh man with no prejudices based on religion, caste or creed. As a singer Gurdas Maan has worked with music directors like Laxmikant Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, Anu Malik, Nadeem Sharvan, Amar Haidipur, Charanjeet Ahuja, Jaswant Bhanyra to mention but a few. He has also recently starred alongside Juhi Chawla in the epic "Des Hoyaa Pardes". An emotive film illustrating the tragedies faced by the people of 1980s Punjab. His role is that of the son of a well-respected Jatt (farmer) Gurdev Singh Somal. He falls in love with the SOH's daughter. Before the wedding, the father is murdered by separatists. This tale soon twists in to the inevitable demise of Gurshaan (Gurdas Maan). This movie was based on actual events.

Aside from singing in Punjabi, he is fluent in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Haryanvi and Rajasthani. As an actor he has performed in Punjabi, Hindi and Tamil movies, most recently "Waris Shah - Ishq Daa Waaris," a depiction of the Punjabi poet Waris Shah's creation of his epic poem Heer Ranjha, again co-starring Juhi Chawla. Also he did a lot of punjabi and hindi movies with famous actors/actresses.

I admire this person a lot.

Well same as above..gurdas mann & surjit bindrakhia :d

Surjit Bindrakhia (Born Surjit Singh Bains) April 15, 1962 – November 17, 2003 was a Punjabi Bhangra singer. He was known for his hekh, in which he sings a note continuously in one breath. His hits include Dupatta Tera Satrang Da, Bas Kar Bas Kar, Tera Yaar Bolda \:d/ , and Jatt Di Pasand. Surjit is considered to have one of the greatest voices in the history of Bhangra.

Surjit was born to his father, Sucha Singh, and his mother, Gurcharan Kaur, in the village of Bindrakh. His father was a famous village wrestler, who brought the village to prominence. Surjit was influenced by his father to take up wrestling and kabaddi. He won intercollege bouts at the university level. Although, his father always wanted Surjit to be a wrestler, he always wanted to be a singer. He began his singing career by singing boliyan for his college bhangra team. He received formal teaching from his guru, Atul Sharma. Bindrakhia appeared in films, before he was a major figure in the music industry. He was extra in movies, appearing in the background of several scenes. It wasn't until lyricist Shamsher Sandhu recognized his talent that Surjit had an opportunity in the music industry. All of his hit songs were written by Shamsher Sandhu and music was produced by Atul Sharma. He married Preet Kamal. The couple had two children, his son, Gitaj, and daughter, Meenaj.

######

Professional Life
Surjit Bindrakhia had arguably one of the most powerful voice among Bhangra singers during his time. Throaty, with a wide range of sounds, he was one of the most successful traditional artist doing the rounds of the bhangra scene during his time. Surjit had been known in Punjab for many years, but his big break in the expatriate market came with Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da, a track that was his best known. Since many remixes were made of his older songs and a new releases . Surjit Bindrakhia is credited as being the first international superstar in bhangra music. His song Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da holds the record for being the number one Punjabi song on UK charts for weeks.

Immensely popular in the rural belt of Punjab, Bindrakhia’s voice was considered to be one of the most powerful voices among traditional singers in Punjab. He had cut 32 solo audio cassettes during his decade-long career. Surjit had been known in the Punjab for many years, but his big break in the expatriate market came with Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da a track that can only be called explosive. Since then there had been various remixes of his older songs and some blockbuster new releases, including ‘Tu Ni Boldi’ and ‘Jatt Di Pasand’ Bindrakhia was a traditional bhangra singer, and since most of his work had been produced in India, it may at first have appeared unpolished. Certainly the music is more “rustic” than that found on many bhangra bands from the UK, but that did not reduce its impact. There are more sustained dhol beats in Bindrakhia’s work than you would find elsewhere and the style is traditional.

A note must be made of the high tone Bindrakhia sometimes uses, which sounded like a screech. You can find others trying such vocal pryotechnics, but few can pulled it off as Bindrakhia did. His singing style worked with the beat, so you would find him pausing along with the dhol and raising and shifting into different keys as the dhol does. All of this gave Bindrakhia the air of a child gone a little mad with his voice. Stated to be one of the most popular singers in Punjab, Surjit Bindrakhia was considered to be the vital link between traditional Punjabi folk music and modern Punjabi pop.

Death :[
Bindrakhia died of a heart attack on November 17, 2003 at his home in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). The high-pitched melodious voice of Punjab fell silent forever with the cremation of Surjit Bindrakhia.

######

Many singers and artists attended his bhog and funeral at Bindrakhia's native village Bindrakh. Some of the artists who turned up to pay their last respects to the legend included Hans Raj Hans, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Babbu Mann, his lyricist and a close friend Shamsher Singh Sandhu and his guru and music composer Atul Sharma, and the legendary Gurdas Maan. Bindrakia stormed the market with over 250 million hit sales of which 175 million came from India alone. He later combined with greats such as Surinder Shinda doing live sets.
