I recently came across this documentary featured on CBC (Canada), about politics and the Sikh religion. This documentary has been heavily criticized by the Sikh community here in Toronto as well as the rest of Canada. Upon watching it, you will understand why Sikhs here are so upset. However, after having watched it, i would like you all to share your views.

Please consider the following questions after you have watched it, and do share your responses:

Do you agree/disagree with the portrayal of Sikhs in this documentary

Why or why not?

Do you think what the journalist is saying is correct? Is he decribing the reality of the situation or is this completely biased?

And share any other opinions you have on this also...

I have my own opinion about it, but i wont say anything just yet, so i will save it till some of you have given your views. Please try to remember that what is shown in this video has not been altered, in other words, what you see is what the cameraman saw at the vasakhi parades.

The documentary also has a lot do with Canadian politics, and not all of you may be familiar with our political system, but try to grasp the jist of the video.

This is the link: CBC.ca | The National | Archive | Politics/Economy | Canada's Political Culture</SPAN>

Please also note that there is a link to part two, directly below that video screen.

Lastly.... DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT kill each other over your opinions on khalistan. Give your views rationally and with utmost respect for those who may not agree with you and avoid the heated arguments that often occur within this section.

yes it is true that Hansa sued Dixie Gurudwara management. One more thing I want to bring in your notice that these guys who were talking in favour of khalistan they are just doing business at the name of khalistan. Son of Sant jarnail singh Bhindraanwala ..... they don't even recognise that guy. He just come like an ordinary sikh to Gurudwara and these guys don't even say Sat sri akaal to him and they talk about Khalistan. huh,..... all is politics. just the way to take out money from your pockets.

Once a person was delivering speech favoring khalistan at Dixie. An old lady kept on listening for almost 30 minutes and then she exploded. she was crying. she said "you people are talking here,, at safe place. you know no body can hurt you. if you really want khalistan go to India and speak there. You people are responsible for thousands of sikh youths been killed in punjab."

I don’t understand why such parades are conducted. Its like they want the world to believe that the entire sikh nation wants Khalistan, which isn't true.

Dixie Gurudwara, the biggest in the Toronto area according to my knowledge, being sued?? OMG... I believe that this itself is disrespectful not only for the Gurudwara committee but for the whole community.

Its pretty clear. Those who dont wanna follow the exact principles and guidelines of Guru Gobind Singhji, will obviously not favor the Khalistan Movement.

thanks for your views. thats true it does have a lot to do with politics, and essentially whats happening is they are mixing religion with politics and nobody understands that if you want a seperatist state then go do it in india, i mean why create all the drama here? canada is a seperate nation and yes we are very multicultural and bla bla bla but this whole movement should be addressed within the indian political system.

yea i agree with you, its not like all of us what a Khalistan and the thing is, the politicians who attend these vasakhi parades do it to get votes, because they know there is a large sikh population in Canada. but they dont realize the politics behind the parade, and in fact most of these gorreh politicians didnt even know they were attending a parade in which the mastermind who plotted the 1984 air india bombing was being honoured. they came to know of this afterwards, but even then they didnt outright object going to these events. And i dont think there is anything wrong with vasakhi parades and nagar kirtan either, i mean its a part of our religion. but i didnt like the fact that extremists were being honoured. it just makes it look like the majority of the sikh population supports extremists and their actions, when that isnt true. of course some sikhs dont view them as extremists or terrorists, to them they are freedom fighters, but thats a whole other discussion.

whats wrong with sueing a gurdwara for financial mismanagement? we live in a democratic society, there should be accountability for every aspect of our society, including religious organizations. After all, when you give a donation to the gurdwara, im sure you would like to see your money being put to good use like in purchasing food for langhar or helping the poor. i dont think theres anything wrong in sueing a gurdwara if they cant show auditors and accountants where the donations are going and how they are being used to benefit the community and the poor.

Dekho...the knowledge I got abt Khalistan, Khalistan would be a state in which following the principles of Guru Gobind Singhji (Amrit Chhak & 5 Ks) would be mandatory (this is wht I believe)...and at present not many Sikhs are following tht (including me)...so its obvious tht some are not in support of Khalistan...:an

What i dont understand is, why do people mix religion with politics. No where in the guru granth sahib does it say explicitly that Sikhs should have a state of their own. I dont think seperatist movements was a principle or guideline of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. I think seperatism for the Sikh community in india is a purely political movement that is being justified and carried forward via religious lines. but in itself, seperatism is not a fundamental principle of our religion.

if i am wrong, correct me with the corresponding passage from the Guru Granth Sahib.

So I,my family and most of my friends will have no place in Khalistan.

well im not against the suing of the Gurudwara as such...Im trying to say tht, a Gurudwara is a place of worship and the occurrence of such an incident at a religious endowment is very disrespectful...

i dont think its disrespectful at all for a gurdwara that has failed to show how it spends the donations it recieves to be sued. its an absolutely logical and rational and legitimate action for the state to take. yes, it is however disrespectful if a gurdwara was being sued for no apparent reason without any proof of mismanagement.
