‘Lohri for girls a farce, Punjabis still prefer male child’

Despite a large number of social and religious organisations pretending to fight against the gender bias, celebrating first lohri of daughters, Punjabis love for male child is still strong in both rural and urban areas of the state.

The tendency, besides other elements of social behaviour is supported by first few questions, which are asked from nurses coming out of labour rooms after the delivery.

Health of the mother and weight of the child are least important while the gender takes the priority. Elite families are no exception to the tendency.

Investigations by The Tribune revealed that family members of expectant mothers were more curious to know about the child’s sex than their well-being.

While nurses bringing news of the birth of a male child are awarded generously, those informing about arrival of a girl child are levelled as ‘wretched’.

A nurse was shocked to know the concern of family members of a mother of two daughters whose condition had worsened after delivering the third girl.

“Maan nun chhad eh dass munda hoyea ke fer pathar jamm piya,” was a reaction of a mother-in-law when she was informed that a unit of blood would be required to revive her blood pressure.

Dr Garima Hind, a gynecologist, who has recently shifted here from Manipal, wondered that despite tall claims about sensitization against gender bias people were stuck up in old mindset.

“While in Manipal people are more concerned about mother’s health and that of the baby, here in Punjab, first question people ask is about sex of the child,” she regretted. Only a few bothers to enquire if the child had cried immediately after the birth, which is the most important event in the new born child’s life.

Solution is to restore the respect and honor of girl in society.

1) Eve-teasers, rapists should be dealt more strictly. Let them realize that their acts do not hold any place in society.

2) It is so easy to carry away for teenagers (14 to 19), and our TV, media and songs are making it worse. School and colleges are shown as place for aashiqui (papera to baad kidda milya karange, chd lae laya dakhla tere karke, aashqa lai sunday kaate banaya rabb ne). These landi-buchi singers should feel some shame, society should let them realize that these type of songs do not hold any place in our society.

3) Stop dowry and fat expensive weddings on the expense of girls parents. "Saanu ji kuch ni chaeeda bas rishtedara di khatir ch koi kasar ni rehni chaeedi". Munde de parivar ch 4 jee hunde te rishedara di line 400 500 di hundi.

4) Last but not least, respect every girl on road. Make this place safe for them to groom so that they can also have successful career.

P.S-> Girls be amritdhari, keep your character and Shri Sahib intact. Give 6 inch of metal to someone who tries to dishonor you. After-all you have the blood of Mai Bhago, Bibi Satwant Kaur and Mata Gujri ji running in your veins.

On a serious note, girls should empower themselves with education, good health, spirituality. Fer thonu koi ni neeva dikha sakda.
Yesterday a girl from Chd., topped the CAT exam in North India.

Re: ‘Lohri for girls a farce, Punjabis still prefer male chi

i have a many of things to say:

1) i personally have no sexist views, any thing God gives is great.
2)without women we men can't marry(except gays), thus we can't have children, thus no more expansion of our population.
3)i also agree with pps309's comments, that if people say its embarrassing when a girl disobeys her family why isn't basti when the boys do it too?
4)in the sikh religon both genders are equal, and there is NO caste system, yet we punjabi/sikhs still choose to follow our own rules.
5)i've been to alot of marriages and parties in Punjab and the main reason there is dowry or BIG weddings is because the groom's side wants to show off and have "BALLE BALLE" comments from their relatives and guests. But, after 5 days of the wedding, nobody talks about it; and the only thing people talk about is the "jodi" (couple).
6) overall i think we should still follow our traditions, BUT we should think and re-adjust to today's world. because back then people weren't as smart as we are today. and since today's people are well educated, we should move away from these small, yet large controversial issues that make our culture and society look bad.
7)we all need to think toward our (mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, mami's, puah's, tahi's....etc.) and REALIZE that they were all baby GIRLS at 1 point in their lives, and since their parents let them live(not kill them) that is why we are here today!!!!!!!!!!!

please think about what i wrote.... and correct me if i'm wrong

Thanks & Happy Lohri to you and you Family :D
