Where I'm From

I am from the houses that hug me so close,
From the streets of gangs and bullies too boldly drawn to be erased.
I am from where hatred is welcome but peace is a nonentity.
I'm from the lies telling me that good will overcome evil.

I'm from the fears of a dark room,
Shadows in every corner calling my name.
I'm from the tears of horror and fright,
Hoping I would be safe as I sleep.

I am from the voices inside my head,
Yearning to escape out into the real world.
I am from dreams that seemed so real to me,
But others thought of them as impossible to achieve.

I'm from the joys of cold blankets of death,
Catching sky-falling cotton balls on my tongue.
I'm from the long arms of water,
Reaching to me, calling me, on a hot sticky day.

I am from hugs and kisses,
From presents and gifts on holidays.
I am from long fingers pinching my already rosy cheeks,
From love and passion taught to me by relatives.

I am from childhood memories,
From swinging so high I could touch the moon.
I am from scratches and bruises,
That only love and affection could heal.

I'm from the album,
Lying under my bed.
I'm from the moments lying in the album,
Which have ever since been long forgotten.
