I always read about these sad stories in a book
I remember the pain in his eyes
that reached into his soul
that sweat through his glands that you can feel when you touch his hands
that you can hear on his breath
that stomp under his step
that distinct laughter
that I didn't realize how remarkable this person was until after
he held my hand through all these years

when I was scared he took away all my fears
now he's sent high above
