Yeast is a fungus that is present in various parts of the body, including the skin. This kind of a fungus thrives and grows in moist and warm areas of the body and hence can be commonly found in places like mouth, vagina or in areas where the skin folds and forms creases. Yeast infection can also occur on the skin, if there are minor cuts or injuries on the skin. The fungi can get inside the skin through such cuts or skin injuries to cause yeast infection rash. Normally, the bacteria present in our body and our immune system help to keep the population of yeasts under control. However, certain internal or external factors, like the weakening of the immune system or decline in the population of the beneficial bacteria can lead to the development of yeast infection. Causes Of Yeast Infection
  • People with weakened immune system because of cancer treatments, steroids or diseases like AIDS, can suffer with these infections throughout their body. Blood, brain, eye, kidney and heart are the most frequently affected areas, but the fungus can also grow in the lungs, liver and spleen. The condition can be as life threatening as well.
  • Yeast infections are the second most common reason for vaginal burning, itching and discharge. Yeast or the fungus is found in the vagina of most women and can grow if the environment in the vagina changes. Intake of antibiotics and steroids are the most common reason for yeast overgrowth in women. Pregnancy, menstruation, sperm, diabetes and birth control pills can also contribute in getting yeast infection in women.
  • Use of certain devices that get implanted in the skin like urinary catheters and IV ports can also provide access for yeast to get in the body. IV drug addicts using dirty needles may inject the yeast directly into their bloodstream or deep tissues.
Symptoms Of Yeast Infection
A rash might appear as a slightly raised red area on the skin as a result of yeast infection. Sometimes some tiny white dots can also be observed in the rashes. Another common symptom that can be observed is the appearance of satellite lesions or pustules, which are generally smaller than the main yeast infection rash. The rash caused by yeast infection is accompanied by itching, swelling and irritation. These rashes may also release a yellow or white colored discharge.

Yeast Infection Treatment
  • Most of the yeast infection can be treated at home itself with few prescribed medications and can be cured within a week. However, if other diseases have weakened your immune system, then consulting a doctor is a better option before opting for self-treatment.
  • In case of oral yeast infection or thrush, it is very important to practice healthy oral hygiene. People who wear dentures should keep them clean always and should practice good hygienic habits. Oral yeast infection can also be cured by swishing the antifungal agent around in your mouth.
  • Women can apply certain over-the-counter medications in their vagina and surrounding tissues for 1-7 days, depending on the formulation of the infection. If the irritation increases after applying the medications, stop the medication immediately and consult a doctor. If you are pregnant then it is better to consult a doctor before resorting to these self-help treatments.
