Many people speak of their ordeal with the wisdom teeth and the pain they had to go through when it came out. The wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to come out and it happens usually in the late teens or 20s. By this time, most people have acquired some wisdom in life, hence the name wisdom teeth. They are the upper and lower third molars, which are located at the end of the mouth. Different people have different levels of pain when the wisdom teeth come out. However, it is to be noted that correctly positioned wisdom teeth do not cause any problems and are healthy.

Problems Caused by Wisdom Teeth:

  • There may be a nagging pain or jaw stiffness near an impacted tooth
  • A wisdom tooth growing at an awkward angle may rub against the inner cheek causing sores and irritation and pain in the jaw
  • Due to the constant pressure in the mouth, crowding of other teeth may take place
  • The flap of gum that is torn when the wisdom tooth comes out may get infected due to food particles getting caught between the flap and the tooth
  • Wisdom tooth that comes out slanted or crooked and not straight may cause a lot of pain in the jaw and also lead to swollen gums. Sometimes, surgical procedure is needed to tear open the gum in order to allow the teeth to come out.
  • Since they are the last set of teeth to come out, there is not much space for them to grow up fully and properly. If they come out in late 20s, it is all the more difficult for the jaw to adjust. This results in impacted teeth.
