Tendonitis is the name given to the condition is which a person experiences inflammation or irritation of a tendon. A tendon basically comprises of the thick, white fibrous cords (tissues) that connects muscles to bones. Under Tendonitis, there is usually pain and tenderness just outside a joint, in any part of the body. The most common body parts where the pain might occur include the places around the shoulders, elbows, wrists and heels. The main reasons for Tendonitis comprise of injury and overstress (during work or play). After knowing what exactly Tendonitis is, let us concentrate on its symptoms and diagnosis.

Symptoms
In case you are suffering from tendonitis, you will experience the following symptoms near a joint, which get worse with the slightest movement:

  • Mild swelling
  • Pain
  • Restricted movement
  • Tenderness

Types of Tendonitis
Depending upon the location of the pain/inflammation, tendonitis can be divided into the following types:


  • Tennis Elbow Tendonitis - In case of Tennis Elbow Tendonitis, a person experiences pain on the outer side of the forearm (near the elbow). The pain gets aggravated when he rotates the forearm or holds an object.
  • Golfer's Elbow Tendonitis - In case of the Golfer's ElbowTendonitis, the pain/inflammation is experienced in the inner part of the elbow.
  • Achilles Tendonitis - A person suffering from Achilles Tendinitis will notice pain above the heel.
  • Adductor Tendonitis - Those suffering from Adductor Tendonitis will have pain in the groin.
  • Patellar Tendonitis - If you are experiencing pain or inflammation just below your kneecap, there is a major possibility of Patellar Tendonitis.
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis - Rotator Cuff Tendonitis usually leads to pain in the shoulders.

Diagnosis
If you suffer from the symptoms mentioned above, your doctor will surely suspect you to suffer from Tendonitis. After that, he will conduct a physical examination to confirm his suspicions. If he has reasons to believe that the condition might be worse than just tendonitis, he might conduct an imaging test known as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In the worst possible scenario, he might ask you to have a blood test to ensure that tendonitis is not because of rheumatoid arthritis or any such ailment.

Treatment
The treatment for tendonitis might comprises of any or all of the following

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Anti-inflammatory injection
  • Ice treatment
  • Physical therapy
  • Shoe inserts
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Ultrasound treatment
  • Weight loss
  • Surgery (the last option in extreme cases)
