Protect Your Hair In The Pool

As we move further into summer, anything besides lounging around in the sun becomes more and more of a struggle. How can we even think about doing anything else when there are a finite amount of hours we can spend by the pool, sipping fancy cocktails, and getting odd tan lines from our new trendy swimsuits?

But those hours spent poolside aren’t all popsicles and coconut oil. At the end of your day (or week) at the pool, you may notice your hair has become dry, brittle, and your shade of blonde is now tinged green. The chlorine in pools clings to your precious strands, sucks the natural oils out, and damages your hair. If you have dyed, permed, or dry hair then you are especially vulnerable to the effects of chlorine. I’m not suggesting you call off your pool party this weekend, rather add some extra haircare steps into your beauty routine for the pool season.

There are some pre-pool steps you can take that will work to ward off the harmful effects. The simplest thing you can before stepping in the pool is wetting your dry hair with fresh water. Take advantage of those poolside showers and soak your hair with the fresh water because your wet strands will take in less chlorine water. Apply some leave-in conditioner as well. This will create a barrier between your hair and the chlorine. The moisturizing quality of leave-in conditioner will also help with the drying effect.

After your dip in the pool, wash your hair using a shampoo product that is specifically designed for post-pool hair. These products work to remove the chemicals from your hair. Overall you should try to shampoo less often so you can allow the natural oils in your hair to come out and moisturize and protect the strands. Avoid any other damaging products and heat styling tools as much as possible since they will only further damage your hair.
