Engaging yourself in outdoor activities can be a lot of fun, to stay in shape as well as enjoy every season. Nonetheless, you need to be as careful as you are, while indoors. You need to take all the safety precautions, which might differ from season to season. During summer, you would want to protect yourself from the blazing sun, while in winters you would want to prevent yourself from getting a severe frostbite. During the wet weather of rainy days, your aim would be to enjoy the showers, while keeping yourself from falling victim to the contagious cold, cough and water borne diseases. The outdoor safety tips given in the following lines would help you have a great time, away from your home.

How To Be Safe Outdoors

In Summers:

  • Watch out for serious cases of sunburns and skin cancer during the summer season. On hot sunny days, when you are outdoors, wear protective clothing, which would shield you from direct exposure to the harmful rays of the sun.
  • Wear airy clothing, made of natural fabrics like cotton, so that your clothes are able to 'breathe', when you are outdoors. Wearing light colored dress during the daytime is also suggested. Make sure to wear sunglasses as well.
  • Protect your skin from the ultraviolet rays of sunlight, by applying a sunscreen lotion or cream. Depending upon your skin type, choose a sunscreen that gives you enough shielding from sunrays. This is to guard your skin from skin cancer.
  • Dehydration is a very common problem in the summer season. When you are outdoors, be sure to drink lots of fluid. It is suggested to go for mineral water and fruit juices, instead of fizzy aerated drinks. This way, you can prevent heat exhaustion, when the weather is very hot.
  • Do not stay outdoors for long duration, because this can lead to severe heat stroke or dehydration. Even when you are outdoors, try to remain under the shade of trees or carry an umbrella.
In Winters:

  • Dress up yourself in warm clothes, if you have to stay outdoors during winters.Wear arm warmers, woolen jackets, sweaters, gloves or mittens and scarf/muffler/hat whenever you are out, especially when the weatherman has predicted windy conditions in your area.
  • Wear boots with non-skid soles, when you stroll through the parks and pavement. This is especially recommended for people living in areas with a snowy weather.
  • When you are outdoors, make it a point to supply yourself with warm foods and beverages, such as nuts, tea and coffee. It is a myth that one should not eat ice creams during winter. In fact, eating ice-cream during winter season would do no harm, if you consume it in moderation.
In Monsoon:

  • During the rainy season, it is better to stay away from power lines. Downed power lines can hurt you severely or even kill you, so do not touch them. Do not touch electrical cords that are broken or have wire showing, because they pose a threat to your life, from a strong shock.
  • Wear slippers or sandals that are do not skid, while walking through the wet and muddy streets. Make sure that the sole of your footwear is not slippery.
  • To prevent yourself from injury due to lightning, avoid standing under trees, during thunder showers.
  • When you are outdoors in the monsoon, always consume packaged drinking water and do not eat food that has been kept open or is stale. This is because water borne diseases are at the peak in this season.
