The word "gomukha" means "cow's face" — "go" means cow and "mukha" means face. Gomukhasana tones the muscles and nerves around the shoulders and upper chest. Shoulder tension is common these days as our activities inhibit free use of the upper body. At the mental and emotional levels the stresses of shouldering responsibilities at work and home, anxiety and fear are often unexpressed and stored in the shoulders, neck and the back, leading to stiffness and hunching in these parts.

The stretch provided by Gomukhasana releases muscle tension. On a pranic level, it affects the vajra nadi and prevents prana from flowing outward. The nadis in the legs and the ones connected with the reproductive organs and glands are also influenced. Thus, hormonal secretions are also regulated.

Those with a houlder or leg injury should practise under guidance.

Gomukhasana

  • Sit in dhyana veerasana (with right knee above left knee). The spine, back and neck should be straight.
  • Place right arm over the right shoulder and left arm behind back.
  • Clasp fingers of both hands behind back. If you can't clasp the fingers, use a towel to get them closer.
  • The spine, back and neck should be straight. Close eyes and breathe normally.
  • Stay in this position for a minute. Unclasp hands, straighten legs.
  • Repeat (with left knee above right knee) and left arm over left shoulder.
