How To Get Fuller Lips

While modern technology offers procedures for lip augmentation, injections may not be your thing (don’t worry, we’re not totally into the disproportionate duck pout anyway). Since enhancing and highlighting certain facial features can easily be achieved with makeup, we decided to go ahead and offer some tips on how to get fuller lips without having to take the cosmetic surgical route.

According to Fitness Magazine, you can create plump lips using four simple steps including exfoliating, applying lip treatment, stimulating tissue, and faking it by applying a light lip color in the proper places.

Exfoliate!

There is nothing more unattractive than dry lips. The worst part? The chapped look prevails in all instances, despite your attempt to hide and cover it with lip balm and lipstick, which typically ends up looking unevenly colored due to the dry, scaly spots. In order to avoid dry lips and get a plumper lip look, you can apply a lip scrub such as LUSH Sweet Lips. You can also create a homemade lip scrub using olive oil and sugar or Vaseline and a toothbrush. Remember to limit your lip exfoliating to once a week, as the skin on your lips is very sensitive.

Apply A Lip Treatment

Apply a plumping lip treatment no less than twice a day. We recommend using Kate Somerville ’Quench & Correct’ Plumping Lip Gloss & Restorative Lip Treatment. Apply the Correct Restorative Lip Treatment first, then coat over with the Quench Plumping Lip Gloss. If you choose to use a lip treatment without the hydrating gloss, make sure that it has plumping ingredients.

Activate Tissue

If you decide to go with a simple lip treatment sans gloss, this is the part where you buy the plumping gloss separately. While the plumping gloss may sting, using a plumping gloss will make your lips temporarily swell, making your lips appear more full. Fitness Mag recommends that you apply as much as you can handle. We love DuWop Lip Venom, as the clear gloss simply works to highlight the natural color and shape of your lips. DuWop Lip Venom is comprised of cinnamon and ginger oils.

Fake It!

Here’s the tricky part… According to The Beauty Department, creating the perfect lip illusion can be done by adding “dimension by playing with shadows and light“ (and by following the three steps kindly provided by TBD’s Amy Nadine).

“If you have fair to medium skin, use NARS Larger Than Life Liner in Rue Bonaparte,” Nadine recommends. “If you have tan to dark skin, use Stila Kajal Liner in Topaz.”

The most important tip to faking fuller lips is to outline three main areas of your upper lip: your philtrum (the two grooves from your lip to your nose), your cupid’s bow (the dip in the center of your upper lip), and the rest of your upper lip (all the way to the corner of your mouth). At this point, you will want to leave your bottom lip alone—do not outline it. Then, make the lines less visible by gently rubbing them to blend closer to the color of your skin/lips. Lastly, apply your preferred shade of lipstick/liner to your lips.
