The healing properties and the medicinal benefits of ginger roots are well known. From treating the simple cold to a variety of cancers, ginger root is said to have the potential to lead to a medical breakthrough. This wonderful root has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years and is still under considerable research. With all the benefits at its stride, it is hard for anyone to believe that there are any side effects of ginger at all. But side effects there surely are, though however minimal or inconsequential they may sound to be. After all, everything has its good and bad side. The most common of these side effects results from over ingesting ginger root. Thus, it becomes very necessary that a person knows what these side effects are so that he/she does not overconsume this root. In the case of ginger root, this is of utmost importance as most people overuse it thinking that at least it won’t do any harm.   • Ginger root may cause mild heartburn. Sometimes it can also cause belching or upset stomach.
  • Mouth irritation may also result from ginger root.
  • Ginger root increases bile production. So, people suffering from gallstones should stop taking it or take it minimally, as it may worsen gallstones.
  • Those suffering from inflammatory bowl diseases or ulcers should not take large amounts of ginger root, as it can aggravate their condition.
  • Ginger root acts as a blood thinner. So, those on anticoagulants should avoid eating large amounts of ginger root.
  • Those preparing to go for a surgery should also not take ginger root as it can cause certain complications during the surgery.
  • Sometimes too much use of ginger root can cause dry and scaly rashes. These rashes first develop on the face and then gradually spread downwards.
  • Prolonged use of ginger can also cause visual sensitivity to bright light.
  • In rare cases, consumption of ginger can cause eye irritation and pink eye.
  • Some studies have found that ginger may also affect the blood pressure and heart rhythms.
  • It is believed that ginger root can lead to mood swings, drowsiness or irregular pulse.
  • Overconsumption of ginger root can adversely affect the digestive system. It can also cause nausea and diarrhea.
  • Ingesting too much of ginger root can increase the production of acids in the body leading to acidity.
  • People who suffer from blood disorders like hemophilia should take medical precaution before taking ginger root. This is because ginger root obstructs the functioning of the platelets.
  • Ginger root can prove to be toxic to the unborn baby. So, pregnant women should stay away from taking ginger root.
  • People who suffer from morning sickness should not over consume ginger root.
  • Ginger root if taken before sleep can make it very difficult to fall asleep again for a long time.
