- While going for meat and poultry, always select lean cuts. White meat from the breast of chicken or turkey, without the skin, is the leanest option as far as poultry is concerned. - While buying ground meat as well as beef, make sure to check the labels, for percentage of lean meat. Pick the ones that have 90 percent or higher lean meat proportion.
- Try to avoid fried food items, including poultry items, as far as possible. In fact, you should stick to grilling, roasting, baking and broiling the food. This will make it healthy and low on calories.
- Stop buying condiments and marinades from the market. Rather, you should try to make low fat condiments and marinades at home only. Though you may not realize, even a little bit of condiments and marinades everyday transforms into a lot of calories, as a whole.
- Remember to include five servings each of fruits and vegetables to your diet on a daily basis. This will not only provide you with the necessary nutrition, but also help you avoid fatty food items.
- Whenever you cook meat or poultry, make sure to trim off any visible fat. . This includes the skin on poultry, which is removed after cooking, along with the fat underneath. You can also use a rack and tray to keep the fat drippings away from the meat, when you cook it in the oven.
- Whenever you are making soups, stews and other dishes, try to boil meat one or two days in advance. After that, refrigerate it. This will make the fat, on top of the meat, become hard and be removed easily.
- After you have cooked meat items, make sure to drain the fat from the pan. Thereafter, rinse them thoroughly in hot water and follow with blotting with a paper towel.
