10 Simple Home Remedies To Treat Mucocele

Some physiological conditions you may undergo may not be harmful, but what if they are annoying? One such example is mucocele, which is also called mucous cyst (1). Though not detrimental to one’s health, it can be very annoying.

Mucocele – An Overview:

Mucocele mostly develops as a small bump inside your mouth, on the lower lips or floor of the mouth. In most cases, such cysts do not cause pain; they burst on their own and healing usually doesn’t take longer.

The presence of such cysts can result in excess saliva production in the mouth, thereby causing speech problems and difficulty while eating food.

Ways To Treat Mucocele:

It is possible to visit a dentist to remove a mucocele (2). A dentist generally uses a scalpel and other specialized equipment to remove the cysts. However, if the cyst is not big or is particularly cumbersome, you may opt for home remedies.

Below listed are some proven home remedies that can be handy in getting rid of mucocele:

1. Honey:

Honey has proven antibacterial properties, and it has been used since ages to treat various skin problems and infections (3). Applying honey on the cyst for a few days will help in reducing the inflammation gradually. You may also apply honey on the cyst before going to sleep every night. Using organic honey can be more beneficial in this regard.

2. Alum:

Hydrated potassium aluminum sulfate, which is referred to as alum, is also effective in treating mucocele. Applying alum will help bursting the cyst easily, and it will prevent the recurrence of such cysts. You may apply alum on a cyst, keep it for some minutes and rinse off.

3. Mouthwash:

Using strong mouthwash with anti bacterial ingredients can help soften the cyst in the mouth and burst it easily. However, you should use a mouthwash with no alcohol for better results.

4. Sage:

Sage is an aromatic herb found mostly in the Mediterranean region. It has natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties (4). You may use sage extract for treating mucocele. Use it for a mouth rinse, but do not swallow.

5. Warm Salt Water:

The simple table salt used by you can come as a savior for eliminating mucous cysts. Take a cup of lukewarm water and mix some table salt in it. Now, use it as a mouth rinse. Try it three times a day or so to soften and burst mucocele. Within a few days, the cysts will be gone.

6. Evening Primrose Oil:

Evening primrose oil, known for its potent therapeutic properties (5), can be used to treat mucous cysts. It works in the same way as alum. Apply this oil on the cysts twice a day or so and within a few days, the result will become visible. It is also available in a capsule form. You will need to break the capsule and apply the content on the cyst.

7. Turmeric:

Turmeric, a household kitchen spice with strong antibacterial properties, has been used to treat several skin infections. You may use it to get relief from mouth cysts too. Take some milk and mix with turmeric paste or powder. Now, take a cotton ball and dip it in the turmeric mixture. Then, apply it on the cyst. Apply it twice a day.

8. Castor Oil:

You may apply castor oil on mucoceles. Mix castor oil with some honey and using a dropper apply the mixture on the mucous cysts inside the mouth.

9. Myrrh:

A thorny herb native to East Africa, Myrrh has potent antiseptic properties (6). The resin derived from its bark can be used to treat mouth ulcers and infections. The diluted tincture can be used as a mouth rinse. However, those with diabetes should not ingest it.
