A church in Florida, US, is reportedly planning to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001, terror attack, a move that has been condemned by many Christians and Muslims. The Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainesville, Florida, would host the event to remember

9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam, which it calls a "deceptive religion" and "of the devil".

The church is promoting the event on its website and Facebook page and has invited Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at its premises from 6 pm to 9 pm.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," church pastor Terry Jones was quoted as saying by the CNN.
The Facebook page has more than 1,600 fans. "Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in its place - the fire!" the page says.

The church also launched a YouTube video to disseminate the message.
"I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they're on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?" Jones says in the YouTube video. "No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil."
Jones also said he has written a book titled Islam is of the Devil, and that the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.
Muslim and Christian groups have, meanwhile, launched a protest against the event.

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.
"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbours of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said.

Another Facebook group with more than 3,000 fans said it stands "against the disrespect and intolerance that these people have for the Muslim people".
An Islamic advocacy group - Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) - has said it would give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders, in a bid to educate the public during the month-long fast of Ramadan.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.

The 9\11 mosque is not even at the same place as ground zero. You can't even see the mosque from ground zero. It is several blocks away where there are broken and abandoned real estate buildings. These people now want to actually convert that space into something usable.

Defiant pastor to go ahead with Quran-burning plan

Civil and military leaders stepped up calls on Tuesday for an obscure US pastor to drop his plan to burn copies of the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, as fears grew it would fan religious hatred.

Pastor Terry Jones of the small Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center church, which has announced the Quran-burning for Saturday, said he was praying for the event but showed no immediate signs of backing down from his plan.

The Rev Terry Jones said he has received more than 100 death threats and has started wearing a .40-caliber pistol strapped to his hip but still did not back off his plan to burn the book Muslims consider the word of God and insist be treated with the utmost respect. The 58-year-old minister said the death threats started not long after he proclaimed in July that he would stage ‘International Burn-a-Quran Day’.

Supporters, though, have been mailing copies of the holy text to his church of about 50 followers to be incinerated in a bonfire on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The planned public torching of the Muslim holy book has already triggered angry protests in Afghanistan, where US troops are fighting Taliban militants, and US military commanders said the event could endanger Americans’ lives.

It comes at a time of heated debate in the US over a proposal to build an Islamic cultural centre and mosque close to the 9/11 site in New York.

Gen. David Petraeus warned in an e-mail to The Associated Press that “images of the burning of a Quran would be used by extremists to incite violence”.

Jones responded, “How much do we back down? How many times do we back down?” Jones told the AP. “Maybe it’s time to send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behaviour.”

Authorities in Gainesville are preparing special security measures to prevent trouble on Saturday at the event.

Pastor Terry Jones had threatened to burn the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks over plans to build an Islamic center near where terrorists brought down the World Trade Center nine years ago.
He flew to New York and appeared on NBC's "Today" show. He says that his Gainesville, Fla., church's goal was "to expose that there is an element of Islam that is very dangerous and very radical."
