Born at: Rae Bhoi di Talavandi known as Nankana Sahib, now in Pakistan Wife: Mata Sulakhani Children: Sri chand and Lakhmi Das Guru Nanak is the first Guru of the Sikhs, he founded the Sikh Faith. He taught that everyone is equal and said that all are the children one of God. He did away with the rituals and idol worshipping. He belived in truthful living and meditation on the name of God. He started a free kitchen or Langar and wrote the Japji Sahib, a prayer that Sikhs recite each morning. Guru Angad Dev Ji - 1504 - 1552 ![]() Father: Bhai Pheru Mall Mother: Mata Daya Kaur Born on: 31st March, 1504 A.D. Born at: Matte di Sarae, Dist. Firozpur in Punjab Wife: Mata Khivi Children: Sons - Baba Dasu Ji & Baba Dattu Ji, Daughters - Bibi Amro Ji & Bibi Anokhi Ji Guru Angad Dev Ji isthe second Guru of the Sikhs. He was a disciple of Guru Nanak's teachings and through his humbleness was chosen to succeed Guru Nanak. He encouraged people to learn Punjabi and introduced Gurmukhi script. Amritsar Wife: Mata Mansa Devi Childrens: Sons - Bhai Mohan and Bhai Mohri, Daughters - Bibi Dani Ji and Bibi Bhani Ji Guhe Emperor Akbar, who was asked to sit on the floor and eat a meal with the Guru. The highlighted fact that in the Guru's eyes, all were equal, and no one person was higher than any other even though he may be an Emperor. Guru Amardas wrote the Anand Sahib, a prayer that is said near the end of every worship. Guru Ramdas Ji - 1534 - 1581 ![]() Father: Bhai Hari Das Mother: Mata Daya Kaur Born on: 24th September 1534 Born at: Chuni Mandi in Lahore, now in Pakistan Wife: Mata Bhani Ji Children: Sons - Baba Prithi Chand ji, Baba Mahan Dev Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Guru Ramdas is the forth Guru. He established a city called Ramdaspur, where he built a pool. This city later became known as Amritsar, the pool of nector, and is now the centre of the Sikhs faith. Amritsar Wife: Mata Ganga Children: Sons - Guru Hargobind ji Guru Arjun Dev is the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. He was the youngest son of Guru Ramdas. He laid the foundations of the Golden Temple which is built in the pool built by his father. Guru Arjun is most famous for collecting together the hymns of the first four Gurus and other writers. He compiled the Granth Sahib and the Sukhmani prayer - the treasure of peace. He trained the Sikhs to fight; they then constructed a fort at Amritsar. Ropar in Panjab Wife: Mata Krishen Kaur Children: Baba Ram Rai & Guru Har Krishan Guru Har Rai is the seventh Guru; He was the grandson of Guru Hargobind. He tried to live in peace and spread Sikh teachings. Guru Harkrishen Ji - 1656 - 1664 ![]() Father: Guru Har Rai Mother: Mata Krishen Born on: 7th July 1656 Born at: Kiratpur, Dist. Ropar in Panjab Wife: N/A Children: N/A Guru Harkrishan was the youngest son of Guru Har Rai and was only 5 years old when he became Guru. He spent his short life looking after sick and needy and he died of small pox at the age of only eight years. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji - 1621 - 1675 ![]() Father: Guru Har Gobind Mother: Mata Nanaki Born on: 1st April 1621 Born at: Guru ke Mahal in Amritsar Wife: Mata Gujri Children: Guru Gobind Singh Guru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind and became the ninth Guru. At the request of Hindu priests from Kashmir, the Guru went to plead with Emperor Aurangzeb to stop forcibly converting Hindus to Muslims. The Guru was beheaded by the emperor when he could not be persuaded to convert onto a Muslim. Guru Gobind Singh Ji - 1666 - 1708 ![]() Father: Guru Tegh Bahadur Mother: Mata Gujri Born on: 22nd September 1666 Born at: Patna Sahib in State of Bihar in India Wife: Mata Jeeto Children: Zorawar Singh, Ajit Singh, Jujha Singh, Fateh Singh Guru Gobind Singh was the only son of Guru Tegh Bahadur. He was made Guru at the age of nine. Guru Gobind Singh created the khalsa, the body of Saint-Soliders and gave the Sikhs the symbols of the Khalsa known as the 'Five Ks'. He also gave the Sikhs new names - all men would be called "Singh" which means lion, and all women "Kaur" which means princess. These new Sikhs did not recognise differences in caste or religion. His Final contribution to the Sikhs was to say that there would be no more human Gurus. In future, the Guru would be scriptures known as the Guru Granth Sahib ji ![]() |
