Sikhs to hold the World's largest Blood donation camp in Anandpur Sahib on March 10.

Guiness Book of World Records has also been invited.

Chandigarh, Feb 16 (IANS) The Sikh holy town of Anandpur Sahib in Punjab will witness one of the biggest blood donation camps in the world March 10 during the Hola Mohalla celebrations at the Sikh shrine of Keshgarh Sahib, 90 km from here.
The blood donation camp, in which over 25,000 units of blood are being targeted for collection within 24 hours, is being organised jointly by the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Purakh ki Fauj (Army of the Almighty).
The blood donation camp itself will be organised on the campus of the Khalsa College at Anandpur Sahib, an SGPC official said here. “The camp will help overcome the wrong notions about blood donation,” he added.
He said that the Guinness Book of World Records has been invited for the historic and biggest-ever blood donation camp.
Sikhs and people from other communities are expected to arrive here from all over India and Punjab to participate in the festival and donate blood. Up to one million devotees are expected to come for the Hola Mohalla celebrations.
The annual Hola Mohalla festival is observed by the Sikh community at Anandpur Sahib to coincide with the Hindu festival of colours, Holi.
Hola Mohalla is famous for its colourful celebrations and the traditional valour and display of acrobatic martial art by the ‘Nihang’ (traditional warrior Sikh sect) community. During the festival, the Nihangs are divided into two camps, ‘Hola’ and ‘Mohalla’ and a mock battle takes place between the two sides.
Tens of thousands of people come to the festival every year in March. Anandpur Sahib is the place where the tenth Sikh Guru (master), Gobind Singh, had founded the ‘Khalsa’ (The Pure) on April 13, 1699. The modern Sikh religion, known for its bravery, sacrifice and entrepreneurship, derives much of its inspiration from the ‘Khalsa Panth’.

If you donate money, you probably give food; but if you donate BLOOD, you gift LIFE!
We get to know the importance of donating blood only when we or some of our loved ones needs it!

Every second someone in the world needs blood.

That someone could be a mother giving birth,
an accident victim,
a girl suffering from life-threatening anemia,
a boy with dengue fever,
a father facing open heart surgery,
a cancer patient...

Thanks to the selfless contribution of blood donors who give their blood voluntarily, these patients received the gift of life.
Evidence from around the world shows that voluntary blood donors are the foundation of a safe blood supply because they are least likely to transmit potentially life-threatening infections from HIV, hepatitis and other viruses, through their blood.

Some facts about blood donation:

* Donating blood is safe & simple. It takes approx. 10-15 minutes to donate blood which can save one precious life :)

* One donation can help save the lives of up to 3 people

* Any healthy adult between 18 years and 60 years of age can donate blood.

* If all blood donors donate blood 3 times a year, it would help prevent all blood shortages

* Four main red blood cell types: A, B, AB and O. Each can be positive or negative for the Rh factor. AB is the universal recipient; O negative is the universal donor of red blood cells.

* Donating blood does not make you weak. It reduces the risk of heart attack.

* If you began donating blood at age 17 and donated every 56 days until you reached 76, you would have donated 48 gallons of blood, potentially helping save over 1,000 lives!

* The donor cannot contract AIDS or any other disease by donating blood.

* There is no substitute for human blood.

* A normal adult has five to six liters of blood in his/her body of which only 300 ml is used during blood donation.

* After donating blood, you replace the fluid in hours and the red blood cells within four weeks. It takes eight weeks to restore the iron lost after donating.

Myth about blood donation

"Other people must be giving enough blood"
That's an assumption! If everyone takes this stand, what will happen to people in dire need of blood?
