Instead of literal interpretation Gurbani use metaphors to explain the concept. Metaphors which a common person would easily understand.
So there are hundreds of references to Hindu mythology and mystical beings.

तारीले गनिका बिनु रूप कुबिजा बिआधि अजामलु तारीअले ॥
ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤ ਜਨੁ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਉਗ੍ਰਸੈਨ ਕਉ ਰਾਜ ਦੀਏ ॥
This Shabd by Bhagat Namdev talks about - Gannika, Kubja, Ajamal, Vidur, Sudama, Ugarsen.
If someone reading Gurbani have no idea who these people are what would he make of this Shabd ?
So is knowledge of Hindu Mythology a Pre-requisite to Gurbani ?
