Girls wearing jeans sent home by Sikh college

CHANDIGARH - March 18: In a rather disturbing reminder of the dress codes forced on women by Khalistani terrorists in the 1980s, authorities in educational institutions run by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee are similarly advising girl students wearing jeans or sleeveless shirts to "go home and change".

Though the gurdwara body does not have any written rule on the matter, its employees in schools and colleges across Punjab insist hip-hugging denims and bare female arms are too provocative and liable to distract male teachers and students. There have been many recent instances at Ludhiana's highly-sought-after Guru Nanak Engineering College, where women students were turned out of classrooms and told to stay away unless they went home and changed into "more respectable attire".

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar actually acknowledges the unwritten rule. "We discourage girls from wearing anything other than the usual salwar kameez because Sikh religion doesn't permit dresses like jeans, pants or other similar wear."

But he insists that no one has been turned away for refusing to adhere. "There is no order against jeans. Our people only suggest and persuade students to do the right thing," he told this newspaper.

GNEC principal M.S. Saini claims he wouldn't allow even his "own daughter" to sport such clothes. "I would tell her that we should only wear something that is accordance with people around us so we can be a part of the crowd. Else we would attract avoidable attention," he said, admitting he had instructed his staff to keep a check on woman students in sleeveless shirts and jeans.

But some feisty young students are indignant. "Jeans are like a uniform for young people across the world but these old fogies find them provocative but they remain unruffled with all the terrible swearing and gang fights the boys get into," said one student who wouldn't give out her name "because they (the college authorities) could harass me".

Sikh scholars point out that dress codes based on religion are ridiculous and an unacceptable violation of personal freedoms. "There were no jeans in the times of the Gurus so how could have they have forbidden Sikh women from wearing these?" said the Ludhiana-based Dr Balkar Singh.

"The Taliban are only a few hundred kilometres away in Pakistan. Do we want to pave their path into East Punjab?" said a concerned faculty member.

No one told that idiot that 'salwar kameez' as sikh womens' dress is not even a century old.before that it was 'Ghagra' all along. ( ask your grand-mothers )
How is Ghagra different to a skirt.
Guys Brace yourselves, we are going back to dark ages :p

Sorry Avtar Singh Makkar, You are an idiot.
There are so many unresolved issues hanging but he will not solve them as his master (Badal) has not given green signal. So he is after the poor college kids.

On the other note, if college has some dress code then students should follow it unless it is that dress is objectionable.
I remember when I was teaching in one of engineering college (Year 2002-2003) at Bijnor, strict dress code for boys (white shirt, grey trousers) and girls (Blue suit and white salwar) was imposed and all used to follow that.

This is just a load of BS. Just like their rehat maryada. SGPC never had any position to define
who is a sikh and who have been changing the defination of a Sikh every second day..... And
now these good for nothing SGPClowns who cant's do much about how men behave are
dictating terms to women. Why...when they want to grab Udasis land they declare them sikhs.

You know Dharma dictates that you follow your own interpretation of your chosen path to God
without fear of being killed or thrown out of your community. It's already a big problem with
people in gurdwaras now shouting at people without turbans to grow their hair...

Like I said earlier, pretty soon there won't be many visiting the Gurdwara's. This is going to turn people
away from sikhi. These are the reasons why people throughout the world are turning away from religion.

The Taliban of Swat.... Taliban of Mangalore(Ram Sene) or the keshdhari Taliban..... they all hate to
see women free. And they all quote from the scriptures and claim theirs is the only reigion which treats
women as a equal but the truth is that secretly they all share an aversion for modernity and a hatred
of women and gender equality. .... thats why some people say all religions are the same........
because all fundamentalists are.

.....And every religion breeds fundamentalists.......... And every religion hates freedom of womenfolk.
The quotes in the scriptures is just a mask every religion wears to hide its true intent towards women.

Thanks

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar actually acknowledges the unwritten rule. "We discourage girls from wearing anything other than the usual salwar kameez because Sikh religion doesn't permit dresses like jeans, pants or other similar wear."

Does it allow Sikh to wear English Suits and Neckties.

But he insists that no one has been turned away for refusing to adhere. "There is no order against jeans. Our people only suggest and persuade students to do the right thing," he told this newspaper.

But why only girls. Are the boys also similarly "persuaded" to take pride
in their Punjabi or Sikh identity and to not to feel ashamed of moving
out of their homes in Kurta Pyajami or Lungi ??

GNEC principal M.S. Saini claims he wouldn't allow even his "own daughter" to sport such clothes.

If this said principal had any confidence in his own and ancestors' identity
he sure will not fell ashamed to arrive at his office in Kachhera.....
But the Punjabi libaas of men had long ago given way to the Bilayati
and Angreji libaas of the goras and for good. It's more comfortable.
And practical.

Jeans throughout the world have been seen as a symbol of freedom of the new
and the young from orthodoxy and conservativism and thats what they are
worried about. Freedom of people especially women. And tell you what is the
most interesting thing about religions ? Buddhism is the only religion in the world
that never said women are equal.

Athiestic principals are the only ones that can truly bring about the emancipication of society
and thus it's women. Even Europe had to be, and was, saved by athiests like Voltaire, Socrates etc.
Only Sikh renaissance will make women feel free even in place
that grandly call themselves 'Chandi' Da Garh....

Just to shed some light here.. I studied in one of the colleges affiliated to Kurukshetra University in Haryana. Even there the girls were not allowed to wear jeans etc. Only salwar kameez were allowed. Infact it was written in the handout that they give on admission.

Some time back a friend of mine told me that when she and her friends are in Punjabi suit they get lot more eve teasing and 'unwanted proposals' compare to when they are wearing jeans/trousers.
As Jean clad girl has an image of a bold/strong woman who would retaliate.

I would like girls to comment on it.

..Majajan..
Western attire attracts more attention especially when in a small town. It is said that a confident walk can sometimes scare off the most dangerous criminals. So, it really depends on how you carry yourself... but sometimes it just depends on who you come across. For me, Jeans may be associated to modernization but certainly should not be synonymous with strength

I wouldn't be surprised now if a group of 50 SGPC workers barge into a chandigarh pub and start beating up a couple of hapless girls for wearing jeans. Why don't SGPC legalise female foeticide? hukamnama jaari kardeyo ke bhai kudiyan nu jamman ton pehlan hi maar deyo..ehna de jeans paun naal dharam di be-adbi hundi aa..
As if the male teachers and students will stop ogling at every pair of legs that walks by IF only the girls wore a "more respectable attire". In fact, it looks like they are having a hard time keeping their already repressed sexualities in check, and they are forcing the object of their lust to cover up as a solution.

All the replies in this topic seems really confused about what they really mean.

Western silhouettes really seems attractive, but they all are inviting kind of silhouettes, My eyes do like to see girls with western attire, because they do have better sex appeal, on the girls side they like western attires, because its associated with their lifestyle, and consumer driven mindness, they dont want to look like the women of old fashion.

But in whole its not at all good for both guys and gals, leading to a diminished culture, and less social values.

Wait wait wait wait... how do they enforce this information:

"We discourage girls from wearing anything other than the usual salwar kameez because Sikh religion doesn't permit dresses like jeans, pants or other similar wear."

And what's the point of stopping girls from what they're wearing? No point at all!

And I'm pretty sure I would go for a girl wearing a punjabi suit over a girl wearing tiny dresses you know... but hey you never know >d

I SAY LET THEM WEAR WHAT THEY WANT :salut
