This sparkling soda gets its big punch from peppery, spicy-sweet syrup that’s impossibly easy to make. Mix it with club soda for Original Ginger Ale, or take it to new heights with our easy adaptations and unexpected uses.

Original Ginger Ale
Combine 1 part cold ginger syrup (recipe below) with 1 part cold club soda, or to taste. Add ice cubes and garnish as desired.

Simple Ginger Syrup
Makes 250 mL (1 cup)
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS
250 mL (1 cup) water
250 mL (1 cup) sugar
250 mL (1 cup) sliced fresh ginger*

*Tip: Peel the ginger, or leave the skin on. It gives the syrup a deeper, richer colour.

DIRECTIONS
In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, combine water, sugar and ginger. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer until sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Simmer 30 minutes longer. Let cool.

Strain syrup through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve into a jar or small pitcher; for stronger flavour, refrigerate overnight before straining.

Refrigerate and use within 1 week.
