Intermot 2006, the international motorcycle and scooter show held in Cologne last week, packed in passion, pizzaz, paparazzi and the public as the top moto makers showcased their sexiest vrooms on two wheels.

It’s arguably the best-known auto show for two-wheelers. Our pick: undoubtedly the Yamaha R1 which most Moto-experts admitted was the star of the show.

This year’s Intermot show was special given the number of new bikes that debuted. All the top names had genuine new models and the visitor interest reflected that effort. Take German luxe marque BMW which displayed five new models at the show.

The pick of the lot were the Supermotard and Enduro models though the rest also triggered a fair amount of interest.

But in terms of sheer product pizzaz, it was Kawasaki that ruled the show. The Japanese bike major launched a whole series of new models at the Intermot with the GTR1400 drawing the maximum amount of adulation and attention.

The Versy, the ZX6R, the Z1000 and the VN900 all added to the star value of this pavillion at the show.

Given how much attention big muscle bike badges attract in our own Auto Expo, the attention levels were understandable at the Intermot. The big bike business has never had it so good and most top companies are looking at value-added and feature loaded models to keep up the tempo.

Even in India, the trend is towards larger bikes although the big volumes are still commanded by the 100-125 CC commuter/ executive segment.

Auto industry sources say there’s a big divide between models and positioning in developed markets and in emerging ones. While bikes are a lifestyle product in the West, in most of Asia they are functional commute solutions.

That’s also why it’s the cost and fuel efficiency that matter more in markets like India and why the big moto monsters have still not made their presence felt here, despite the bike craze triggered off by movies like Dhoom.

Indeed most of the big-splash brands at the Intermot 2006 are already present in India but their presence is vastly different from their global positioning.

Ninja racers

Kawasaki, for instance, does not crank out any of its big Ninja series models in India as part of its tech alliance with Bajaj.

Nor does Suzuki sell its iconic Hayabusa here. Yamaha, which so far restricted itself to sub-200 CC bikes in India, are now thinking of introducing some imported moto monsters. As for BMW, after its last experience with bikes it has decided this market is not right for the big machines.

Which means most of the delectable machines on display at the Intermot will probably not come to India in a hurry. But with the bike market acquiring a performance and lifestyle niche, they would eventually vroom on Indian roads as well. Sooner rather than later.
