Semi autonomous ‘The Grid Concept’ is a car sharing system for 2025
Marten Wallegren, a Swedish designer, comes up with Grid concept, which is a car sharing system for 2025. Designed for RCA Vehicle Design Degree Show 2010, ‘The Grid’ is a two-seater semi autonomously driven commuter car with options for driving yourself or being automatically driven. Apart from this, the vehicles within ‘The Grid’ are equipped with solar panels and they collectively create not only a grid for car sharing, but also an infrastructure for energy distribution.
Inspiration for the car came from artist Eva Hild’s clay sculptures where holes and surfaces are connected in an infinite transition exposing the chassis. However, when the commuter car is not occupied, the cabin is thin for reduced wind resistance and little energy consumption. But when a passenger occupies, its cabin folds down, thus creating required seats. Also, keeping in mind the cramped city spaces in 2025, the compact vehicle can be stored like supermarket trolleys and batteries then can be connected for an even distribution of energy.
