Highlights of the Zest are the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and the first AMT gearbox mated to a diesel

August 12 will mark a new chapter for Tata Motors as the Indian carmaker will launch the Zest compact sedan in India. The Zest is the first new and improved Tata product with hopes to revive the carmaker’s fortunes in the domestic market. It will take on the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and the Honda Amaze.

Although the Zest looks new, it isn’t an all-new product. The car is built on an improved Vista/Manza platform but uses completely new panels, heavily revised interiors and an improved suspension setup. The quality levels too have seen a significant improvement on the Zest compared to the Vista. The big additions over the Vista are the powertrains. A new 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine and an AMT gearbox mated to the diesel unit give the Zest new arsenal in this very tough battleground. The petrol and diesel engines both come with max power output of 90PS but the diesel delivers a higher torque of 200Nm compared to 140Nm developed by the former. Besides the AMT for the diesel, both engines come with 5-speed manual gearboxes.

Tata Motors has lost major ground on the sales charts in the past two years and is now firmly out of the top five carmakers in India. The Zest and Bolt hatchback have the ability to take the new Tata Motors back into the big league but it won’t be an easy revival. Expect Tata Motors to be aggressive with the Zest’s pricing. The Zest should be priced between Rs 4.5-7.5 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi to give it a fighting chance in this segment.
