Sadly, the 2011 New York auto show came and went, and all Mercedes-Benz displayed was the A-class concept that broke down on stage. We were half-expecting (or rather, dreaming) to see the SLS AMG Roadster, but it seems we’re now in for a wait until September and the Frankfurt motor show.

Don’t despair though, because a lab-rat Mercedes SLS AMG has been caught by our spy completely undisguised in Germany, sporting a fashion disaster of a black body and beige soft-top. Nevertheless it’s still an SLS AMG and resultantly looks gorgeous, even without the signature gullwing doors.

The two versions will obviously share the 563bhp and 650Nm 6.3-litre V8, so 0-100kph should come up in four seconds for the Roadster, while the hard-top despatches it in 3.9 seconds; hardly a trade-off for wind-in-your-hair antics.
