Tata turns Elegante

We decided to start with Tata Motors even though that may not be the hottest showcase window to Geneva.

But then Tata Motors has been working very hard at moving up the value chain and away from the Indica cab image. And this is one effort which people are bound to sit up and take note of. Coming close on the heels of a rather neat makeover to its cars, Tata Motors has unveiled a concept car called Elegante at Geneva. It is a vehicle larger than its existing sedan Indigo.

"The concept car that we are showcasing here would probably meet the design cues of our new models which will go into production from next year and the next to follow," according to Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata.

While the new models based on Elegante are expected to fill the company's portfolio in the bigger segment, the new sedans are likely to be badged under the Indigo series itself. Elegante has been conceptualised to incorporate a four cylinder transverse petrol and diesel engines from 1.4 litre to 2 litre and a compact V6 petrol power unit.

The diesel version has the common rail direct injection (CRDi) turbo engine and the capability to comply with Euro 5 emission norms. The future cars based on Elegante could be launched in the Indian market quite soon as Tata Motors is pushing hard to turn concepts into reality.
