Maserati may build a supercar based on the LaFerrari hypercar which unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, earlier this month. If built, this will be second time that Maserati is using a Ferrari design to create a car, its previous vehicle the MC12 was based on the Ferrari Enzo.

The MC12 used the same engine, gearbox and chassis of the Enzo but it was wider, lower, longer and significantly more aerodynamically efficient. The MC12 was originally the Italian automakers race car for its return to FIA GT racing after 37 years. The road-going version was produced for homologation purposes and around 50 units were produced and sold for 600,000 Euros (Rs 4.2 Crore).

According to a report from Car magazine UK, the successor to MC12 may use the same 6.2-litre engine, chassis as well as gearbox from the LaFerrari or slap on two more turbochargers onto the twin turbo 3.8-litre mill from the Quattroporte and raise its output from 532bhp to well over 900bhp. Maserati is not expected to adapt the HY-KERS system due to weight issues.
Like the MC12, its successor is expected to have a much cleaner body design and styling as compared to its scarlet cousin. Car suggests that it will have removable roof panels as well as a slightly more luxury oriented cabin than the LaFerrari.
Since the MC12 successor will use most of the LaFerrari’s components, we expect that it will be priced quite high and will have a very tiny production (slated to be around 50 units like the MC12) run to justify the high price.
