Maruti Suzuki is set for a new product blitzkrieg in the next five years. Reports indicate the Indian carmaker intends to launch 15 to 20 new models before 2017. Maruti Suzuki wants to protect its market share by launching new low cost vehicles. According to sources about 80 per cent of these new models will be small cars.

Five new models are already in advanced stages of development. One of them is definitely the new Swift DZire sub compact sedan. We had earlier reported that the new DZire will be shorter than four metres. This new DZire is expected to be unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. The other model that we expect to see in Delhi is the RIII multi purpose vehicle. The RIII was displayed at the previous auto show as a concept.

Three other models that we expect to see in the near future will be the new 800cc hatchback, face lifted A-Star and Ritz. The 800cc car has been dubbed as the replacement of the Maruti 800.

Maruti Suzuki has already said it would increase its Research and Development initiatives. It has recently opened a new R&D centre in Rohtak and will be investing Rs.1,000 crores to Rs1,500 crores on new product development.

Maruti Suzuki is keen to increase product development within India. Its previous models were developed in Japan with inputs from Indian engineers. The carmaker now wants to develop new models indigenously to reduce production costs. Further Maruti Suzuki also wants to develop global cars that will be sold in international markets apart from India.
