First launched in 2010, the Mahindra Thar finally gets its first ever major upgrade. The Thar now costs Rs. 8.03 lakh (Ex-Nashik) and the upgrade is only available on the CRDe variant; not on the DI.The exterior sees changes like new front and rear bumpers, new butch-looking wheel arches, clear lens headlamps, tubular side footsteps and a redesigned canopy. For those who want a bit of customization, the people at Mahindra are offering genuine accessories & customization options too.

The new Thar features more premium interiors including a new black-beige dashboard, wider seats, redesigned center bezel, sporty 3-pod instrument cluster, new steering wheel and gear knob, re-designed AC vents, new windshield demister and door trims. For added convenience, there's a new lockable glove box and a new floor console with cup holders.

Under the hood, the Thar gets the 2500cc CRDe engine with the same output as before 105bhp@3800 rpm and a torque of 274Nm from as low as 1800-2000 rpm. It gets the standard 4WD system with high & low ratios.
The upgrade is available only on the BSIV compliant version, however, the DI which is BS-III compliant will still be sold by the company.
Catering to the off-roading enthusiasts, the power that the engine produced was always a plus point but now Mahindra has managed to provide a mechanical locking rear differential on the Thar which will provide power to one of the rear wheels thus giving it that extra push.
Mahindra sells almost 10,000 units of the car every year out of which 70% are the DI variant and CRDe variant only contributes to only 30%.
