Don’t expect BMW’s upcoming 3 Series to bowl you over with its revolutionary design. It will be as much of a shock as the F10 5 Series was over the E60, but one variation of the next 3 Series just might cause mild bouts of asphyxiation.
We are, of course, talking about the 3 Series Gran Turismo. Immediately, images of the 5 Series GT flood your mind, as you fight the urge to bash your head against the wall. But don’t despair; the 3 Series GT will be smaller, tighter and thankfully lacking the ginormous rear end of the 5er.
Judging by our heavily disguised spy photo subject, it just might actually be cool. Expect the same range of naturally aspirated and turbo six-pots, as well as the new generation of four-pot turbos to sit under the bonnet, plus a host of seven- and eight-speed transmissions driving the rear wheels.
We’d be lucky to see a concept in Frankfurt, and a road going version by 2013.
