Here’s a strange bit of news, folks. The Range Rover Evoque is set to borrow the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine from its rival, the BMW X3, for the Dakar Rally in January.

RaBe Race Cars is getting the ZF six-speed auto Evoque ready for the 9,000km rally in South America and has turned to the Bavarian carmaker for its 275bhp motor.

It’s also fitting the baby Rangey with other goodies such as BF Goodrich desert tyres, a Reiger coilover suspension, and a 260-litre fuel tank.

Experienced trio, Martin Rowe, Andrew Coley, and John Hardy of Britain’s Excite Rally Raid Team, will take turns behind the wheel during the gruelling 14 day event.
